I mentioned some details on my old blog but here's a note from my mommy on Caiden's birth story...
"Contractions started Saturday afternoon and quickly got to about 4 minutes apart. They weren't too strong but we decided to start getting ready since the doctor said 2nd babies usually come much quicker. We called my parents and had them come down to stay with Kelsey and we left for the hospital around 11pm. A brand new maternity section of the hospital opened up a week before which this city desperately needed and we were excited to be able to deliver there. We should've known when the patient access lady was no where to be found when we were trying to check in that this process may not be quite as expected! She came in 10 minutes later asking if there was a full moon and complaining that she hadn't had her break yet because "people like us" kept coming in every time she stepped outside! We finally got upstairs and were told to sit in the waiting room and they would be with us. About an hour later we were still sitting out there with another couple, both of us in labor :) Mark got up and called into the nurses station asking what was going on and was told that they were working on getting us a room. We asked if we should just drive to the other hospital but she said she couldn't tell us what to do. We heard from 2 different patients that were sent home that they had no beds and were transferring people to another hospital. We figured we'd be in the same situation at that hospital so we waited a little longer. About 2 hours after checking in, we finally were admitted and I was hooked up to the monitors, only to be told that we would have to be transferred via ambulance to the other hospital. (Smart move on their part...admitting so they could charge us for their services!) It took about an hour to be transferred because they couldn't find their paperwork and didn't know how to open up the doors...scary!! They did hand me a Babies R Us gift card as I was being wheeled out as a thank you for "not being mean" :)
Mark met us at the new hospital around 2am and I was hooked up again to the monitors. We had the greatest nurse who was super understanding and accommodating after a bad couple of hours! Contractions were still 3-4 minutes apart and I was at 5cm. I was given some meds and was able to sleep for a few hours. At 6am, she came back in and said that she had talked to the doctor on call (because it was Sunday and I was 2 weeks early, my doctor was out of town). He was going back and forth between the two hospitals and lots of babies were apparently being born that weekend. He said if I wasn't at a 6, he was sending me home...I wasn't, so home we went! Such a FRUSTRATING night!! We came home and slept for awhile. I was exhausted and confused...I had contractions every 3-4 minutes consistently for 11 hours! My parents were trying to decide if they should stay or go back home for work on Monday morning. We went and walked around Old Town and ate some yummy Mexican food. I didn't feel too different so I told them to go home. Around 9pm, the contractions got really strong. I tried to hold out til the next morning so my doctor would be back in town and I wouldn't have to deal with the on call one but we decided not to chance it! We dropped Kelsey off at some dear friends at 3am and drove to the hospital. We didn't even bother with the new one and were excited to see that our sweet nurse from the day before was on again that night! I was admitted around 4am, given an epidural around 6am and our sweet boy was born at 9:30! Despite all of the dumb drama from the night before, this labor was so easy compared to Kelsey! Because I was 2 weeks early and he came so easily, I was expecting a 6 pound baby...I was shocked when they said 8.1lbs and immediately thanked God that he was early or he could've been huge! He had dark hair and deep blue eyes. He was beautiful and we were immediately in love!!
We were given about an hour with just the three of us before they transferred us to another room. Kelsey had a fever on Sunday and I was planning to take her to her doctor on Monday morning. Our friends took her for us and she had an ear infection :( Her doctor knew I was in labor though and gave her an antibiotic and said it would be fine for her to be around Caiden as long as she wasn't kissing him! She was a little unsure at first but quickly fell in love with her baby brother and it was a challenge (and still is!!) to keep her out of his face! She is a great big sister! We stayed in the hospital the rest of the day and night and went home the next morning.
Thanks for letting me record our story!! Love, Mommy"
There you go friends! I do love my brother dearly and think he likes me a lot too! This picture is when I met him for the first time!
